Major Changes to New Zealand's Skilled Migrant Category

Immigration New Zealand (INZ) has announced transformative changes to the Skilled Migrant Category (SMC) residence visa, set to take effect in late 2025 or early 2026.

These reforms aim to simplify the pathway to residence while ensuring New Zealand attracts the skilled workers it needs.

The Two New Pathways

Pathway 1: Skilled Worker Pathway

For workers already in New Zealand on a work visa

Requirements:

  • Currently working in NZ on an eligible work visa
  • Employed in a role earning at least **median wage ($31.61/hr)**
  • Minimum **2 years of NZ work experience** in a skilled role
  • Meet health and character requirements
  • Key Benefits:

  • No points test required
  • Simpler, more predictable process
  • Rewards those already contributing to NZ
  • Pathway 2: Highly Paid Worker Pathway

    For high-earning professionals

    Requirements:

  • Job offer paying **1.5x median wage or higher** ($47.42+/hr)
  • Relevant qualifications or experience
  • No minimum NZ work experience required
  • Key Benefits:

  • Fast-track for high earners
  • Can apply from offshore
  • Immediate residence pathway
  • What's Being Removed
