Overview of the New Skills in Demand (SID) Visa

The Australian government has introduced a significant overhaul of its employer-sponsored visa program. Effective December 7, 2024, the new Skills in Demand (SID) visa replaces the Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) subclass 482 visa.

This change is part of Australia's broader migration strategy to address critical skill shortages while providing clearer pathways to permanent residency for skilled workers.

Three Streams Under the SID Visa

1. Specialist Skills Stream

  • For highly skilled workers earning **above $135,000 annually**
  • No occupation list restrictions
  • Faster processing times
  • Direct pathway to PR after 2 years
  • 2. Core Skills Stream

  • Replaces the Short-term and Medium-term streams
  • Occupation must be on the **Core Skills Occupation List**
  • Salary must meet market rates (minimum $73,150)
  • PR pathway after 2 years
  • 3. Essential Skills Stream (Coming 2025)

  • For lower-paid essential workers
  • Sectors like aged care, agriculture, hospitality
  • Specific safeguards for worker protection
  • Details to be announced
  • Key Benefits of the New System

✅ **Simplified Structure** - Three clear streams instead of multiple confusing categories

✅ **Faster PR Pathway** - 2 years instead of 3-4 years for most applicants

✅ **No Occupation List for High Earners** - Specialists earning $135K+ can work in any skilled role

✅ **Better Worker Protections** - Stronger regulations against exploitation

If you currently hold a 482 visa:

  • Your visa remains valid until expiry
  • You can still apply for PR under existing pathways
